The Seattle Mariners (9-13) and Texas Rangers (10-11) illustrated in 2023 how thin the line between ultimate success and also-ran status can be. The Rangers won 90 games, claimed a wild-card spot and went on to win the franchise's first World Series championship. Seattle won 88 games, missed the postseason by just one game, and significantly retooled its roster to slash payroll in the wake of not making it back to the playoffs. On Monday, Texas hosts the Mariners for a Cactus League encounter in Arizona at Surprise Stadium. The Rangers have lost their last three spring-training games while the M's come off a loss on Sunday.

Seattle couldn't hold a late lead and fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Sunday. Logan Gilbert had his best outing of the spring, striking out seven and scattering three hits in five scoreless innings.
Right-hander Adrian Sampson, signed to a minor-league deal in February, is scheduled to start for Texas on Monday. He has allowed three runs in five innings this spring. The Mariners had not announced a starter.
